Newmarket House offers both 5- and 10-week placements for third year students from the University of East Anglia BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing degree. These are designed to help students develop their knowledge, skills and practice in a specialised setting in preparation for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Placement students will work with Newmarket House nurses on a supernumerary basis and be engaged in experiential learning involving exposure to all aspects of the nursing role, from dispensing medication to acting as the named nurse overseeing particular patients’ care. They will also participate in multidisciplinary discussions with other members of the team and liaise with patients’ community teams, reflecting the important role played by nurses in facilitating integrated care responsive to patients’ physical and wider psychosocial needs.
We offer occupational therapy placements for students at both undergraduate and master’s levels. Due to the highly specialist nature of our service, we are only able to accept students for their final elective placement (8 weeks). This ensures that students come to us with a strong foundation of experience across broader clinical settings, allowing them to draw on existing skills while developing new ones specific to our specialist environment. Placements are coordinated directly with our occupational therapist and are offered subject to current capacity. If you are interested in a placement, please contact us well in advance to discuss availability and suitability.
We provide one to two placements each year for students on the University of East Anglia Psychology with a Placement Year course. This ten-month, three-days-per-week placement gives students an opportunity to develop their knowledge about eating disorder treatment, acquire clinical experience supporting patients in many aspects of their treatment and to contribute to clinical outcome audits and other research projects.
We co-host two six-month placements for trainees on the UEA Clinical Psychology Doctorate programme. Trainees spend one day each week at Newmarket House and two days with the Norfolk Community Eating Disorder Service. While at Newmarket House, they provide individual therapy, co-facilitate a psychology skills group (e.g., ACT, DBT or MANTRA) and receive weekly clinical supervision.
