We welcome enquiries and visits from those affected by eating disorders, their doctors, families, carers and friends however formal referrals are made usually by either a psychiatrist or physician.

We accept referrals fulfilling the following criteria:

• a primary diagnosis of an eating disorder
• aged 16 or over  
• the patient is willing to accept treatment on a voluntary basis. If it is felt that a patient detained under The Mental Health Act may be prepared to accept treatment at Newmarket House voluntarily, their status may be reviewed in order to facilitate admission  
• patients must be able to accept fluids and food orally
• The belief that the treatment offered at Newmarket House Clinic is appropriate to the needs of the prospective patient 

If it is felt that an admission may be appropriate, the prospective patient is invited to attend the Clinic for a detailed assessment by one of our psychiatrists and members of the clinical team.   All aspects of the case are considered, as is the opinion of the referring clinician. The feelings of the prospective patient, their family and carers will be listened to and taken into account.  The assessment provides an opportunity for the prospective patient to see the Clinic, to meet members of the team and discuss the treatment programme.   A comprehensive report is written and sent to the referrer and the GP.   We prefer not to assess a prospective patient for admission until funding has been agreed, as this prevents possible disappointment, and usually we will not offer an assessment until a bed is available.   

We are committed to working collaboratively with referrers and local services.   Close liaison is maintained throughout the patient’s stay.   They are kept fully informed of the patient’s progress as well as being invited to attend the patient’s review meetings.

Newmarket House Clinic is a tertiary service, accepting both local and national referrals.   The large majority of patients is funded by the NHS, either through service level agreements or out of area placements.   We also accept privately funded patients and patients part funded by private medical insurers.
